President’s Letter November 2020

Dear Subscriber First Name,

“It was a dark and windy night” when I sat down to compose this letter. (I always wanted to use that opening line.) Daylight Savings is gone, we’ve already had our first snow in New Mexico, and coronavirus cases are spiking again. Uncertainty certainly reigns at the moment, with even some of the early 2021 events having been cancelled. You can check our Tournament List to stay abreast of any schedule changes. The national tournament schedule is already posted.

Our Forum has been busy lately as many of you weigh in on the changes that the USTA is implementing, starting in January. And we’ve loved the stories that have been sent in by you, our members – keep them coming! Or book reviews, instructional articles appropriate to seniors, etc.

In our recent BOD conference call, we took the big step of naming three new members to the Board of Directors. That brings our total on the Board to nine, the number prescribed by our by-laws. We were excited to have such an excellent pool of individuals to choose from. Those named were Tony Dawson, Larry Eichenbaum, and Noble Hendrix for three-year terms. This year we will be doing our Annual Board Retreat by Zoom in December.

The passing of Larry Turville in part prompted our selection of the new Board Members. There will be a celebration of his life and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque with pedestal at the St Petersburg tournament (date TBD). Funds are needed to cover these expenses. As Thanksgiving draws nigh, I’d like to express my gratitude to all of you who help our game thrive. There are so many of you who have made and continue to make contributions that help shape the great game of tennis. For me, I could never repay what the game has given me. When you see the camaraderie amongst the players, the shared experiences and aspirations, the connectedness that breaks down barriers, you realize that the tennis experience is much more than scores and rankings.

With this message going out shortly after Veterans Day, I’d also like to acknowledge those who have served our country in the military. We truly owe a debt of gratitude to those who have been willing to put their lives on the line to protect our democratic principles.
