President’s Letter March 2021

Dear Subscriber Name,

A year ago this month, we began to face the stark realization that the COVID-19 pandemic was going to be a serious matter. How serious? We knew something was up when we were told we would have to wear masks to enter the bank or the convenience store. Whaaat? As it turned out, it was deadly serious, literally, and we’ve since endured a year like no other.

On a brighter note, tennis participation in the US increased by 22% in 2020. There’s an interesting article on the subject published by the USTA – US Tennis Participation Surges in 2020. It highlights the increased participation but also has links discussing the substantial benefits of playing (our sanity for one) and guidelines for staying safe and healthy while playing tennis.

Even though the tournament calendar has been shredded by cancellations and postponements, our webmaster has been diligently updating the Tournament List on our website. No small task, but well worth the effort so that members can begin to plan their schedules. As part of the NSMTA Invitational Team Series, Joe Rasgado has been working for months to put together the Froehling Cup in Stuart, FL at the North River Shores Tennis Club. Six teams with over 20 players per team will begin play on Thursday, April 1. Thanks to Joe and all the Team Captains!

The NSMTA bag tags that go out to new and renewing members have been well received, so we are expanding our gifts. Now, 3-year members will also receive an NSMTA logo hat, and 5-year members will receive the bag tags, hat, plus a long-sleeve logo shirt. With the spring season here and the Covid vaccination more available, there is hope of a great summer with lots of tennis and no canceled tournaments!
