Roger North started playing the sport of a lifetime in the Northeast with his high school buddies and once defeated one of the biggest names in tennis history. He then competed on the Swarthmore tennis team under a renowned coach and author. North’s professional career took him to the Pacific Northwest, where he, serendipitously, returned to tennis competition as a senior with modest expectations. One of the giants in contributions to men’s senior tennis in the US passed away peacefully in Sarasota, Florida on September 18, 2024 at the age of 89. Alan Messer played many roles within the game of tennis over six decades – player, official, tournament director, and perhaps most significantly as the originator of the first website devoted exclusively to men’s senior tennis. Armistead Neely, born March 19, 1947 in Tampa, lost a lengthy battle with cancer on March 7, 2024. He is survived by Alice Pendergrast, his wife of forty some years. They lived in the Atlanta area for several decades.
