Roger North started playing the sport of a lifetime in the Northeast with his high school buddies and once defeated one of the biggest names in tennis history. He then competed on the Swarthmore tennis team under a renowned coach and author. North’s professional career took him to the Pacific Northwest, where he, serendipitously, returned to tennis competition as a senior with modest expectations. Roger candidly admits he never imagined that he’d someday rank No. 1 in the U.S. If only his famous coach could see him now!

One of the giants in contributions to men’s senior tennis in the US passed away peacefully in Sarasota, Florida on September 18, 2024 at the age of 89. Alan Messer played many roles within the game of tennis over six decades – player, official, tournament director, and perhaps most significantly as the originator of the first website devoted exclusively to men’s senior tennis. By now you should have received your personal invitation to play the inaugural National Level 3 NMTA Masters Clay Court Championships in Columbus, GA April 10-14. The registration closes on March 27th. This will be an annual event striving to bring the players tournament experience on an equal plane like the now 2 premium events in the south, the Harry V Barton Bocage Clay Court Championships and the Atlanta Senior Invitational.

Armistead Neely, born March 19, 1947 in Tampa, lost a lengthy battle with cancer on March 7, 2024. He is survived by Alice Pendergrast, his wife of forty some years. They lived in the Atlanta area for several decades.

The spring national tournaments are just around the corner. Already the first two National Level 2 events in the NMTA Triple Crown Series had almost 300 players participate in each event. Part of our mission statement is to foster tennis competition among adult players on a nationwide basis.
