July 13, 1928 - January 10, 2023 James Edgar Settles, 94, of Laguna Niguel, California. Jim was passionate about tennis - playing, coaching, and volunteering to grow the sport. He was an accomplished junior player before representing Pepperdine at the highest level of collegiate tennis. He continued to play while serving in the military, and competed in adult and family tournaments for over six decades. He obtained No. 1 national rankings in multiple divisions well into his eighties.

At the Carl E. Sanders Family YMCA in Atlanta, GA, this past Friday, on April 21, a beautiful NSMTA commissioned plaque commemorating Ralph Grieco’s love of tennis and assistance to others was dedicated. The plaque will hang in an alcove dedicated to racquet sports, “Donors” and “Athletes” of which Ralph was both.

Ralph’s wife, Kristy, and the Grieco family have joined with the NSMTA to create the Ralph Grieco Tennis Fund to spread Ralph’s love of a lifetime of playing tennis to others. To date the fund has aided after school programs teaching tennis at the Carl Sanders Family YMCA in Atlanta, Georgia Tennis Foundation scholarships to tennis players going off to college and the Georgia Tennis Foundation youth program that teaches tennis to those in financial need.

As senior players, we all face similar problems with our tennis abilities. We have aging, aching and weakened joints and muscles. Some of which have been permanently injured, some of them surgically repaired. None of them are as good as they were in our prime 40 or 50 years ago. If only we could turn back the clock!

The Florida West Coast Swing of the Larry Turville Super Senior Grand Prix Series ended with the Raymond James tournament at the St. Pete Tennis Center and the final event in the NSMTA Triple Crown Series. The event, called the Keith Donoff Cup, was held at the Bocage Racquet Club in Baton Rouge, LA. The Gordon Trophy is an annual tennis competition between the United States and Canada that was started in 1949. One of the goals of the Gordon Trophy is to encourage camaraderie and competition. This tradition continues to this day thanks to dedicated tennis players on both sides of the border. This website has been created to help share the experiences of our yearly competition.

This year’s Ralph Grieco Memorial doubles tournament was held July 17 to 20th at the beautiful Hound Ears Club in Boone, North Carolina. The event grew from four to six teams this year and expanded to play from three to four days. Each team fielded one court each of 65s, 70s and 75s.

While watching the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells this past week, the all too familiar scene on the tennis tour was injuries. The sport of tennis requires all-direction extreme lunging and movements. It requires incredible endurance. Injuries are inevitable in this physical sport, especially at the highest, most grueling levels. Injuries can short-circuit careers. Big names like Barty, Collins, Federer, Nishikori, Tsona, and Thiem are all recovering from injuries and unable to play.
